Rosie The Scarecrow

If you live in the Halewood area you may have noticed the arrival of a lot of new residents around and about... The Halewood Culture Festival this year included a Scarecrow trail. Carole of Halewood Arts ran a number of workshops throughout Halewood giving residents the chance to make their own scarecrows and be included in the trail.

Of course our wonderful Junior Artists Club wanted to contribute to this and Rosie was made. The JAC have a passion for creating environmentally friendly art work and wanted to create an environmentally friendly scarecrow. Rosie has been on display at the front of The Environment Centre and the Junior Artists have become very attached to Rosie.

Have you spotted Rosie when driving past The Environment Centre?

We then ran a session in which the children could do some drawing outside, making the most of the lovely weather we have had recently.

We then decided to ask the JAC, "What did Rosie do next?" and like always some of the drawings and stories the children came up with where great! Here is an example of some of the work.

Rosie went through the flowers and they got on her for life

Rosie went to a JLS concert

The story that went with this drawing - "Rosie was chasing the cat, to put her in the bin"

We are very proud of the work the JAC produced as always, do you have any pictures or stories about the other scarecrows you have seen around Halewood?

Workshop Volunteer Needed

Halewood Arts Association are looking for people to help out with the Junior Artists Club workshops on a Wednesday afternoon. The children are aged 7 to 12 years old.

It would involve committing to two or three hours a week only. We need people who can relate to children, are interested in education, arts, or environmental issues.

An enhanced CRB check will be undertaken.

One of our regular volunteers Sophie has this to say about working within Halewood Arts Association

"I have been an active volunteer within Halewood Arts Association for over a year now. I assist in the office, organising events and assisting the Junior Artists Club every Wednesday. I thoroughly enjoy it here and the skills I have learnt and the people I have met have improved my CV so much and the opportunities that have came up from this are invaluable"

Would you be interested in helping? Or do you know anyone else who may?

Please contact Carole or Sophie at The Environment Centre, Okell Drive, Halewood. Or email halewoodarts@gmail.com

In Memory Of...

Over the past couple of months, Carole and Sophie of Halewood Arts Association have been organising a celebration event. A few years ago, working alongside, St Marys Care Centre and Halewood Centre for Learning, Halewood Arts Association helped to create a beautiful book called In Memory Of...

There is nothing so evocative or immediate as history told by those who lived it. This book gathers together almost a century of memories of a number of elders now living in Halewood. The stories begin in 1908, and they describe times of great hardship, of childhoods in the streets of neighbourhoods now lost to us, of war, evacuation and the Liverpool Blitz and of work on the land and in the factories. The memories collected in this book are accompanies by images of the time and together they create a unique and vivid insight into life in the twentieth century.

The event itself was lovely and Halewood Library allowed us to use the venue. We had a great turn out from the St Marys Centre, Local Residents and Halewood Arts Association. There was a lovely afternoon tea, readings from members of Halewood Arts Association and U3A and some brilliant story telling from John Hughes.

Fiona Martin, Chair of Halewood Arts Association introducing the Event
Liz Owen reading one of her own pieces from the book.
Bill McNeil, from U3A reading his own piece from the book.
Dave Ward of The Windows Project, reading a piece from the book.

John Hughes, Story Teller.
We also had John Hughes come along for the afternoon and entertain us all with his brilliant story telling. He got everyone involved and it was a great end to the event.

Anna Jackson, from Halewood Centre for Learning accepting two cases of the book.
The book will be used by students within the drama classes in Halewood, allowing the stories to live on and be used on a regular basis.
It was lovely to hold this event and give a final congratulations to all the people involved and celebrate the brilliant work produced.

We received a wonderful letter from Halewood Library afterwards saying;

"The work that Halewood Arts Association put into the event as well as the work that went into producing the book was excellent. It was so nice to see an event aimed at the older generation, that was well attended and to which so many of that generation had made a contribution. Thank you for all the work you put in to arranging such a well attended event."

Overall we are extremely happy with the final outcome of the event and we also have a number of the books left. If you are interested in purchasing one of our books, drop into Halewood Arts Association or give us an email at halewoodarts@gmail.com. The books retail at £4.99 and include some wonderful stories and poems.

National Wildflower Centre

This week we took the Junior Artists Club on a trip to the National Wild Flower Centre. It was a great afternoon and we spent it exploring the whole place, learning about the different ways in which flowers can grow and having lots of fun.
